Serenbe: Swanston
Both artists, Tom and Gail Swanston live in the heart of the portion of Serenbe devoted to the arts.
As long-time residents of South Fulton County, the couple was involved in early meetings about land use in Chattahoochee Hill Country which brought awareness of Serenbe. The sense of community and commitment to the arts provided a unique combination that led them to their current home. They designed their home and studio/gallery in partnership with an architect who was mindful of integrating the built environment into the natural landscape.
Situated along a creek, the couple wanted to blend a 19th century aesthetic with a contemporary feel. While they were not always aware of water conservation as an issue, since moving to Serenbe the couple has become much more aware of their personal water use. A years-long drought in Georgia really hit home for them and led them to focus on personal conservation. Tom hopes that his grandchildren’s generation will have the benefits of gray water systems or other technology that will make them astounded why our generation literally flushed away millions of gallons clean, potable water down the toilet every day.
