Serenbe: Nevins

With two young children and an active lifestyle, Dallas and Preston Nevins’ home is often a gathering place for other Serenbe families. Similar to many other residents, the Nevins fell in love with the community by experience, after frequent visits to Dallas’ parents, Gwen and Pepper Bullock, deciding to make it their home as well.

Dallas illustrated her Mother’s book, “Grandma Goes Green,” which provides 10 tips on a greener lifestyle for children. Perhaps because of Grandma’s efforts, their children, ages three and five, are often the voice of conservation at home. They are mindful of turning off water when brushing your teeth or doing dishes and sometimes have to remind Mom and Dad to do the same.

Efforts to conserve, however, have been hampered by inefficient fixtures that often take too long to dispense hot water, causing too much wasted water. The family hopes that recent plumbing upgrades will solve this problem. The kids were fascinated by their neighbor’s “magic potty,” a dual flush toilet with buttons instead of a traditional handle flush that is magical to the younger set, and now will have the same in their home.
