GA Water Contingency Task Force Recommends the “3C’s” – Conserve, Capture, Control
Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue met with the state task force last week which is developing alternatives to replace the 280 million gallons of water per day that the Atlanta metro draws from Lake Lanier.
News reports say the task force has a three-pronged approach to meeting Atlanta’s water needs in the event that Georgia is unsuccessful in appealing a federal ruling that metro Atlanta may not continue to use Lake Lanier as a drinking water source:
Conserve: The obvious, although not always welcomed, given that many people equate conservation to sacrifice. Conserving also means infrastructure investments to fix leaks.
Capture: The plan calls for building more resevoirs and storage facilities.
Control: Restrictions on water use, which can include outdoor water use and plumbing requirements for new homes and buildings.
Atlanta’s Creative Loafing reports that one estimate has Atlanta-area water rates rising by as much as 54 percent. especially if there is no relief from the 2012 deadline set as part of the the July federal ruling. Calculate your current water rates.
